Broward Health Files Plans for an Emergency Department in Lighthouse Point

On Dec. 13, the City of Lighthouse Point’s Development Review Committee reviewed plans to transform a 1.03-acre site on Federal Highway, north of the Walmart (at 5360 N. Federal Highway), into a Broward Health freestanding emergency department (ED).
As reported by the South Florida Business Journal, Broward Health acquired the property for $4.95 million and intends to demolish the 15,742-square-foot office building currently there. If approved, Broward Health will redevelop the site into a two-story, 14,074-square-foot facility with 9,417 square feet for the freestanding ED, 4,757 square feet of medical office and 36 parking spaces. It would include 10 treatment rooms and a CT scanner. It will not keep any patients overnight.
“While we work toward city approval, Broward Health is pursuing an expansion of its footprint to Lighthouse Point,” Broward Health President and CEO Shane Strum said. “It is always our goal to not only provide the highest quality care to our community, but also convenient access to that care. The new freestanding emergency department, like the one being built in Sunrise, is the latest step in fulfilling that mission.”
Broward Health broke ground on a freestanding ED in Sunrise in October. Freestanding emergency departments are a way for Broward Health to reach more patients who don’t live in immediate proximity to a hospital.
